Nina Dobrev (Nina Constantinova Dobreva) was a Canadian- Bulgarian actress and was born in Sofia, Bulgaria on January 9, 1989. Nina moved to Canada at the age of two and has lived in Toronto, Ontario. She speaks French, English and Bulgarian fluently. Her mother is an artist and her father is a computer scientist.
Additionally, she attended J.B. Tyrell Sr. Public School, Wexford Collegiate School, for the Arts in Scarborough, after graduating she attended Ryerson University. While attending at Ryerson she majored in Sociology but in 2008 she dropped out to pursue acting. From a very young age, she showed great enthusiasm and talent for the arts: dance, gymnastics, theatre, music, visual arts, and acting. She attended the Dean Armstrong Acting School which led to her being discovered by many talent agencies. Modeling jobs led to commercials, which then turned into film auditions. Shortly after, she have roles in films such as “Fugitive Pieces”, “Away From Her”, and the popular television series “Degrassi: The Next Generation” on October 14, 2001 which was premiered in CTV.
She did “Degrassi: The Next Generation” for four years from 2006-2009. It was her constant, no matter what movie she would do on hiatus or whatever she does elsewhere, every year she would always go back to Degrassi, to her family, and they really sort of taught her all the groundwork and got her started. Before she thought it was really green, she doesn’t know what she’s doing, so it kind of helped ease her path into the whole industry.
Aside from the famous television “Degrassi: The Next Generation” she starred on, she is currently starring in the CW’s drama The Vampire Diaries loosely based on the book series by L.J. Smith. She is playing the dual role of Katherine Pierce, a vampire that both brothers each loved while they were still human during American Civil War and Katherine’s doppelganger Elena Gilbert, a human which is caught between two vampire brothers- one good, one bad. Recently, she wrapped production on “Chloe” with Julianne Moore, Amanda Seyfried, and Liam Neeson that was theatrically released by Sony Pictures Classics on March 26, 2010.
Nina loves to travel and has often visited Europe both for pleasure, as well as competing internationally representing Canada in Aesthetic gymnastics. She enjoys playing volleyball, soccer, swimming, rock climbing, wake boarding, snowboarding, and horseback riding to name a few.
But above all acting is her passion, and she sees it as an adventure that has just begun; she believes that the journey and the characters we create along the way will help us understand ourselves.
